On May 29, 2018, a decision was made to keep Omonoia alive in the realm of football. It was a historic day: the conversion of the football department into a corporate entity led a large segment of the Omonoia fanbase to choose a different path, the path of collectivity, participation and grassroots ownership.
The founding of O29M was not merely a fresh start in football; it was a collective act of dignity and defiance, aimed at keeping the ideals of 1948 alive. It was a decision made by people who refused to accept football as a corporate product, choosing instead to rebuild it from the ground up with a focus on community, participation and collectivity.
It marked the establishment of a grassroots, fan-owned club. A club that belongs to its people, where fans are not treated as mere customers. Guided by the “Against Modern Football” ethos, O29M became part of an international movement that resists the commercialization of sports and defends football as a common good. Over these eight years, our Club has not limited itself to its football division. Instead, it has evolved into a multifaceted community encompassing sports, culture, and social action. We have established an amateur basketball team, a handball team, a running team, a basketball team for individuals with intellectual disabilities, a research department and various cultural initiatives operating under the Cultural Foundation 1948.
Most importantly, all of this has been built collectively. O29M relies heavily on volunteerism, active participation nand the selfless contributions of individuals who dedicate their time, effort, and creativity to keeping the Club alive. From organizing events and social initiatives to handling day-to-day operations, the Club continues to demonstrate that the people can organize and create outside the logic of profit and corporate management.
For a grassroots, people-based club represents more than just a different management style; it embodies a different vision for society. It serves as proof that communities can collectively create and uphold their own values.
Eight years later, the slogan remains as vibrant as ever: BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE!!!
Eight years of keeping the ideals of 1948 alive!
Happy anniversary to the people’s club!
